Grenade attack in Jammu was a revenge attack for assault on Geelani: Police

Srinagar
July 22, 2006:

Police in Indian administered Kashmir today said the grenade blast in Jammu bus stand on June 12 which killed one person and injured 31 others was executed as a revenge for assault on separatist leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani in Jammu.

Geelani, who is the chairman of hardliner faction of All Parties Hurriyat Conference was assaulted by activists of Shiv Sena in Jammu while he was addressing a press conference on June 10. .

Following the assault on Syed Ali Shah Geelani in Jammu, 'Abu Alqama a Pakistan based Lashkar-eToiba operative' directed his aide Raju alias Mudasir Gujri in Srinagar to execute a revenge attack in Jammu, Director General Police, Jammu and Kashmir, Gopal Sharma told reporters here.

Sharma said police has arrested Raju alias Mudasir Gujri, alleged militant commander of Lashkar-e-Toiba, and describerd him as the king pin, responsible for coordinating many terrorist activities. Raju carried a reward of 500,000 INR on his head.

Raju alias Mudasir Gujri was instrumental in the attack on Congress rally in Srinagar in May, recent grenade attacks on tourists in Srinagar, the grenade attack in Jammu Bus stand besides coordinating, organising and ensuring terrorist activities in Kashmir, Sharma said.

Geelani however brushed aside the police claim of revenge attack and said 'it only reflects their (police) thinking'.

"We do not believe in revenge politics." Geelani told Kashmir Newz.

"There have been 14 attempts on my life so far. We have never resorted to revenge." He added.
