Historical Kashmir fort opened after 17 years

Srinagar, April 18, 2007 (Kashmir Newz Desk) :

Bridgin the gap
Government today opened the 200 year old Hari Parbat fort in Indian administered Kashmir for general public after it was closed down owing to the eruption of insurgency in the region.

The fort which sits at the centre of Srinagar, summer capital of Kashmir provides a 360 degree view of the city. Due to its strategic importance the fort was until now under the occupation of Para troopers, who used to have a birds eye on the vital city.

With security situation improving, government has decided to open up this once popular fort for general public on the World Heritage Day. The fort was inaugurated by Director Tourism Farooq Ahmad Shah, who termed the fort as valuable cultural asset for Kashmir.

The fort was built by Afghan Governor Atta Mohammed Khan from 1776-1808 AD. But the surrounding wall of this fort was built much earlier by Mughal Emperor Akbar in 16th century. The fort is flanked by a Muslim Sufi Shrine on one side, a Hindu temple on other side and also a Sikh Gurudwara.

Farooq said that government is planning to renovate the major historical buildings in the state to make attract heritage tourists. He said that government is also contemplating a plan to conserve rich Budhist tradition of Kashmir.

“A project to conserve Buddhist circuit in the valley at an estimated cost of INR Two crore has been submitted to the Ministry of Tourism and is expected to approved soon” said Farooq. A classical musical programme was also organized on the occasion.
