Beig, Sagar get best Kashmir legislator awards

Srinagar, May 16, 2007 (Kashmir Newz Desk) :

Two legislators from the opposition party, National Conference in Indian administered Kashmir have bagged the legislator awards for the year 2005-06 and 2006-07.

Chief Minister of the Indian administered Kashmir Ghulam Nabi Azad and State Legislative Assembly Speaker Tara Chand gave away the awards to legislator Mehboob Beig and Ali Mohammad Sagar here today at a function organised by the Jammu and Kashmir State Legislative Assembly in the summer capital Srinagar.

Awards were also given out to media persons for extensively covering the State Legislative Assembly session 2005-06.

Azad who was the chief guest on the occasion, said that both the legislators as well as the media persons in Jammu and Kashmir had worked through the 'troubled times' of the conflict.

Armed insurgency against the Indian rule broke out in the state in late Eighties and around 80,000 people have been killed during this 17-year-oldperiod of turmoil in the region.

Azad said that the legislators of the state have always maintained high standards during the proceedings in the House.

He said this was not the case in Indian states like Gujarat and Uttar Pradesh where the legislators would often be seen going hammer and tong at one another with whatever gadgets they find around.

Azad said that during his tenure in the Parliament, he had found the former Indian Prime Minister and the Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) leader Atal Bihari Vajapaye as the "best parliamentarian".

"Though he then was in the Opposition, he would often be the best choice for the best parliamentarian," Azad said.v The Chief Minister also praised the Communist Party of India (CPI) leader Inderjeet Gupta saying that he would always use flowery language despite hurling heaps of criticism on the treasury benches.

During his speech, Azad stopped while the 'Mauzin' (One who recites the Azan) called the faithful for the 'Asar' (forenoon) prayers.

Azad also asked the media to be more guarded while disseminating news saying that in the rat-race of breaking the news they were coming up with half-baked lies.

He said that while surfing through the Indian news channels he never found a single good news item.

"These channels portray 24X7 (24 hours through out the week) that the entire India is burning in conflicts and family tiffs. The viewers are continuously bombarded with bad news," he said.

The members of the State Legislative Assembly Kafeel-ur-Rehman, Khem Lata Wakhlu and Ashwani Kumar Sharma were given letters of appreciation as citation for representing their constituencies in a proper manner for the year 2005-06 and Gujjar leader Mian Mohammad Altaf, former state Home Minister Abdul Rehman Veeri and Balwant Singh Mankotia got the citation for 2006-07.

The Committee which selected the legislators for the awards comprised of Ex-Speaker Legislative Assembly Ali Mohammad Naik, Ex-Speaker Choudhary Mohammad Aslam and Press Trust of India Jammu Bureau Chief M K Bangroo as the judges.

Acting Chairman Legislative Council P Namgyal and Deputy Speaker Legislative Assembly Mohammad Akbar Lone also spoke on the occasion.
