Rehmani criticises knighthood to Salman Rushdie

Srinagar, June 19, 2007 (Kashmir Newz Desk) :

Muhammad Farooq Rehmani Convenor All Parties Hurriyet Conference, Pakistan administered Kashmir has strongly criticised the conferment of knighthood by the London Government to controversial novelist Salman Rushdie.

The conferment of Knighthood to Rushdie, according to Rehmani has hurt the sentiments of Muslim world.

Salman Rushdie published his book Satanic Verses from Penguin London, in 1988, depicting Prophet (PBUH), his family and teachings of Islam in a slanderous manner. Rehmani accused Rushdie of having shown disregard to the historical truths and heartfelt beliefs of over one billion strong Muslim community.

"By conferring the title 'Sir' on Salman Rushdie, the British Government has harmed the efforts of religious harmony and dialogue between different faiths in the world,” the statement issued by Rehmani said.

Rehmani has urged on the UN and Muslim States to take concrete steps to reverse the title confered to Rushdie by London government, failing which a worldwide movement against the Rushdie and London government will be initiated. He has also called upon the muslims 'Sir' title holders to relinquish the title, in case title to Rushdie is not withdrawn.
