Army officially takes over kashmir.com

Haroon Mirani

Srinagar, October 01, 2007:

armyinkashmir

After reports about the auction of the domain www.kashmir.com appeared last week, the Indian Army has removed it from the auction site sedo.com.

The domain has been redirected to army’s website www.armyinkashmir.nic.in, thus confirming its ownership.

Since Kashmir Newz reported about the auction and ownership of the site by Indian Ministry of Defence, more facts about the domain have surfaced.

A UK based Kashmiri IT engineer, Khurshid Nahami claimed that he owned the site, before it was “hacked by the army”.

Nahami alleged that the domain was stolen from him by the Indian army in May 2002 using sophisticated methods.

“At that time the regulation and security of the names managed by Network Solutions (at the time one of a few companies allowed to register domain names on behalf of customers) was very lax,” he told Kashmir Newz over phone from UK.

A scan of back dated pages of the domain on the website, www.archive.org, which stores backdated pages of websites, adds weight to Nahami's claims.

The pages up to March 2002 give details about Kashmir dispute, and looks more anti-India while after August 2002 the content on kashmir.com looks aggressively anti-Pakistan.

Nahami alleges that it was during this period that this website, with a politically sensitive name, was stolen from him.

Experts fear the recent controversy about the domain auction may lead to yet another scandal in the army.

“It seems that some insider might have been trying to sell this website that could have attracted a handsome amount,” they opine. Its initial bid was 10,000 USD, which could have increased manifold, as it attracted businessmen, politicians, intelligence agencies and governments alike.

Army’s original website www.armyinkashmir.com is still on sale with the minimum bid of 60 USD.
