Kashmir media students launch campus paper

Srinagar, October 03, 2007:

A group of four Kashmir students Wednesday came up with a weekly campus newspaper to mark a first in the University of Kashmir.

The newspaper ‘The Campus Herald’, a brainchild of four media students of the university, was inaugurated today.

The four-page black and white newspaper is first publication in the university solely managed by the media students.

The Media Education Research Centre (MERC) of the university despite the persistent demand of the students has not been able to come up with any such publication even after 20-years of its inception.

The department only publishes an yearly journal ‘Media Times’.

Media persons in Kashmir have appreciated the effort of these students.

“This is a slap on the face of MERC, which failed to come up with such a publication for the last 20 years citing excuses like insurgency against Indian rule in the region,” said a university teacher.

In absence of a news room, the foursome of Mohammad Numan, Zahid Rafiq, Qasim Zahid and Danish Nabi, the second semester students of MERC, are seen working on their laptop computers under the shade of majestic Chinar trees in the Naseem Bagh on the banks of world famous Dal Lake.

Mohammad Numan told Kashmir Newz that the idea of staring a weekly campus newspaper struck them last week.

“We approached the Vice Chancellor (Abdul Wahid Qureshi) who gave us a go ahead. Though we have brought out the newspaper with our own money, the VC has promised to sponsor the paper in future,” he said.
