Observe Jumat-ul-Vida as Kashmir Day: Mirwaiz

Srinagar, October 05, 2007:

Kashmir’s chief cleric and chairman of the moderate faction of All Parties Hurriyat Conference Mirwaiz Umar Farooq has asked the people to observe the last Friday of Muslim fasting month of Ramadhan as ‘Kashmir Day’.

Jumat-ul-Vida or the last Friday of Ramadhan is also observed throughout the Muslim world as the Youm-i-Quds (Day of Quds), where Muslims hold demonstrations demanding the retrieval of Al Aqsa Masjid, Islam’s third holiest site, and for solidarity with Palestine.

Addressing a Friday congregation at the historic Jamia Masjid in Srinagar, the summer capital of Indian administered Kashmir, the Mirwaiz said that the last Friday of the fasting month would be observed as ‘Kashmir Day’ and ‘Quds Day’ simultaneously in solidarity with the people of Palestine and to focus attention on the 60-year-old Kashmir dispute.

The Mirwaiz said that the aim of observing the Kashmir Day was to attract the attention of the international community towards the situation in Kashmir.

He alleged that the instances of human rights violations carried by Indian troops and paramilitary forces are on the rise while “bloodbaths and killings have assumed alarming proportions”.

The Mirwaiz termed the situation in the state as “extremely worrisome”. In his address he said that a lasting and durable solution to Kashmir dispute as per wishes and aspirations of people only would ensure peace in South Asia.
