Landmine explosion injures trooper in Kashmir

Mohammed Mohsen

Srinagar, March 12, 2008:

An Indian trooper got injured in a landmine explosion in Indian administered Kashmir’s northern district of Kupwara on Wednesday, police said.

The landmine went off in a minefield at Bore Keran Kupwara near the along 720-km long ceasefire line, the de facto border which divides Kashmir between Indian and Pakistan administered parts.

The injured trooper has been identified as Hawaldar Chandrapal Raina of 33 Bn of Indian paramilitary Border Security Force.

Last year, a Srinagar based civil rights group, Jammu and Kashmir Coalition of Civil Society (JKCCS) and International Campaign to Ban Landmines (ICBL) organised a series of year-long activities calling for a ban on the use of antipersonnel mines in Kashmir.

The members wooed Muzaffarabad based United Jehad Council, an amalgam of 13 guerrilla groups, to announce a ban on the use of antipersonnel mines in the region at the end of their two-week visit to Pakistan administered Kashmir.

The alliance also lobbied for the de-mining of the ceasefire line.

ICBL has also been encouraging New Delhi and Islamabad to consider a moratorium on the new mine use and to launch comprehensive mine clearance programmes in their respective regions.

In Indian administered Kashmir most mines are planted along the ceasefire line and the 198 km long International Border from both Indian and Pakistani side.

As per reports some army installations like Khundroo arms depot in Indian administered Kashmir are mined along its periphery.
