Eid joys for Bitta Karate' family

Srinagar, Oct 25:

For Fatima, 60, mother of Farooq Ahmad Dar alias Bitta Karate Eid has brought her wishes true. Her son has been released after 16 years in detention.

"It is a new lease of life to me," says Fatima as she attends the vistors who are flocking her house since morning to congratulate the family.

"We are celebrating Eid after 18 years," she informs.

"It is a celebration for the whole locality," Ghulam Qadir, a neighbour said.

A member of Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front, a militant outfit then, Dar was known more by his alias Bitta Karate and became a household name in Kashmir in the early nineties.

He was arrested in June 1990 and served more than 16 years under detention.

Dar was bailed out by the Supreme Court of India first in 2004 and again in 2005 but on both occasions he was detained again under Public Safety Act again.

A TADA court in Jammu has now granted conditional bail to Dar.

On Tuesday evening Dar's younger brother Mohammad Shafi Dar returned home with a sad news - 'Bitta has been detained again'.

Shafi had gone to Kathua with bail orders to seek the release of his brother but returned home empty handed.

"We thought they detained him (Farooq Dar) again, like on previous occasions when he was released but detained under PSA again," said Farida, sister-in-law of Dar.

A midnight call however woke up the family. "It was an officer calling from outside the house along with Bitta," Farida said. Dar had been released.
