After insurgency gang war in Jammu & Kashmir

Gang wars are re-surfacing in Jammu and Kashmir, a region known more for the 17 year old insurgency. Faisul Yaseen reports.

Nov 29, 2006:

Two unidentified assailants killed underworld gangster and a finance company proprietor Sanjay Kumar Gupta alias Bitoo and Bakra on Nov 25, in posh Trikuta Nagar locality of Jammu, summer capital of Indian administered Kashmir.

According to sources the killing was part of gang war in a region known more for the 17 year old anti-India insurgency.

Following the killing, Police sounded alert and picked up a number of criminals for investigation and to avoid clashes between the rival gangs.

Gang wars are not new to Indian administrated Kashmir but unlike insurgency, which is widespread in north of the Pir Pinjal mountainous range in the Kashmir Valley and adjoining districts of Doda, Bhaderwah, Kishtwar, Poonch and Rajouri, gang wars are frequent in the Hindu dominated Jammu city.

The recent killing indicates a resurfacing of gang wars that had dwindled after the outbreak of anti-India armed insurgency in 1989.

Gupta, a resident of Jain Bazaar locality of Jammu, owned Mahajan Finance Company at the aristocratic Residency Road area. He was allegedly involved in number of cases of murders, attempt to murders and stabbing.

According to sources Gupta and his other gang members had strong rivalry with another gang of Sikander Arora alias Billo who was murdered inside District Jail Jammu in 1997 and with one more new gang of Vipan Bhoot and Sethu.

Two unidentified pistol borne men, possibly members of a rival gang, opened fire on Gupta at point blank range when he was visiting the clinic of a local doctor, police said. The alleged gangster died on the spot.

Sanjay’s brother Sanjeev Gupta alias Bobby, a Dogra Liberation Front (DLF) leader alleged that it was a handiwork of rival group. He also hinted at the involvement of police in the gangster's killing . . .
